Washington D.C. (NNCNOW.com) - U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar is pushing the Federal government to support a program that will help fight against prescription drug abuse and the growing heroin crisis.

The Senator is asking the Drug Enforcement Administration to take immediate action on "The Secure and Responsible Drug Disposal Act of 2010.

The act expands drug take-back programs.

Four years after being signed into law, the D-E-A hasn't fully implemented the bipartisan legislation aimed at creating federal programs to help properly dispose of unused prescription opiates.

Senator Klobuchar says the D-E-A's full enforcement of the law will help keep the drugs out of the wrong hands and prevent prescription drug and heroin abuse.

"Four years of dangerous pills have been left vulnerable to misuse, potentially falling into the wrong hands of our loved ones fighting addiction or criminals or being accidentally consumed by an innocent child. We need the final rules; we must get them done right. With so much at stake, we must get them done now," said Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN)

Since 2010, more than 3.4 million pounds of prescription drugs have been collected across the country through designated take back days.
