WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) issued the following statement in response to new reports that messaging service WhatsApp changed its user data policy:

“New reports indicate that WhatsApp user data will soon be shared with other businesses owned by Facebook. This raises additional concerns about how Facebook’s acquisition of WhatsApp has negatively impacted both user privacy and competition. It is particularly troubling that Facebook would make this change affecting users’ data privacy while the company is facing federal and state monopolization lawsuits that could force it to sell off WhatsApp.

“Consumers shouldn’t have to pay the price for Facebook’s insatiable appetite for user data. It is critical for Congress to pass comprehensive data privacy legislation, and until that happens, Facebook should reverse this misguided policy.”
