The funding will go to the Rondo Neighborhood Streets Improvement Study, which will determine how to improve accessibility and connectivity for communities of color, areas of persistent poverty, and regional transit routes
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Tina Smith (D-MN) and Representative Betty McCollum (D-MN) announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has awarded $1.4 million to support the Rondo Neighborhoods Streets Improvement Study, which will identify and define necessary infrastructure improvements in St. Paul communities.
“Investments in our infrastructure serve as down-payments on the long-term economic well-being of our state and country,” said Klobuchar. “In St. Paul, the need for a comprehensive, effective, and inclusive transportation plan has never been greater. I’m proud to have helped secure this federal funding to improve safety, spur the regional economy, and boost living standards in our neighborhoods.”
“In order to build an economy that works for everyone, we must invest in crucial infrastructure,” said Smith. “I’m thrilled to announce this significant federal investment in Minnesota’s infrastructure that will improve safety and accessibility in St. Paul. I'll continue to fight for federal dollars that back Minnesota priorities.”
“I’m proud to help bring $1.4 million in federal funding to St. Paul for the Rondo Neighborhood Streets Improvements Study,” said McCollum. “A community-centered planning process is key to determining the transportation needs of this historic community. With a focus on safety, equity, and quality of life, these funds will help create opportunities for Rondo residents to thrive. The destruction of one of America’s most vibrant Black communities for the construction of I-94 leaves lasting wounds, and more investment is needed to ensure healing for Rondo residents. I’ll keep working to bring additional opportunities for restoration, economic, and community revitalization for this special neighborhood.”
This project will help determine how to improve accessibility and connectivity for communities of color, areas of persistent poverty, and regional transit routes.
Klobuchar and Smith are strong advocates for the Rondo Neighborhoods Streets Improvement Study and sent letters of support for the project to USDOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg earlier this year.
The funding will help to improve mobility for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders in the historic Rondo neighborhood, which was split with the construction of Interstate 94.
