Legislation would strengthen democracy, make it easier to vote, and end influence of dark money in politics

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Chairwoman of the Committee on Rules and Administration with oversight over federal elections and campaign finance law, announced that the Rules Committee would hold a markup of the For The People Act, S. 1, on Tuesday, May 11, 2021. The markup follows the March 24 hearing in the Committee.

“Across the country, the right to vote is under attack and special interests are drowning out the voices of the American people,” Chairwoman Klobuchar said. “The For The People Act is essential to making our democracy work for every American, which is why I am announcing a markup of the legislation on May 11, 2021.”

The For the People Act would enact pro-democracy reforms to make it easier to vote, end the dominance of big money in politics, and ensure that public officials work for the public interest. Important reforms in the bill include guaranteeing every American citizen full access to the ballot by combating voter intimidation and suppression; ending the corrupting power of dark money in our elections; and putting an end to partisan gerrymandering. The For the People Act would also expand access to our democracy by ensuring all Americans have access to early voting and voting by mail.

The markup will be broadcast live on Tuesday, May 11, 2021 on the Rules Committee website: HERE.
