In March, Klobuchar led 21 of her Senate colleagues in a letter urging the Biden administration to reconsider proposed changes to the classification system that could harm mid-sized towns

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) issued the statement below following the Biden administration’s announcement that it will withdraw proposed changes to the definition of a Metropolitan Statistical Area:

“The way that the federal government categorizes local communities has major impacts on counties, cities, and towns across the country, especially when local governments seek grants to provide critical services that people depend on. That is why I led my colleagues in the Senate to call on the administration to reconsider changes to their classifications that could have resulted in fewer resources for many small- and mid-sized areas. I’m grateful to the administration for making the necessary adjustments to ensure these areas receive the funding and resources necessary to enable communities to thrive.”

In March, Klobuchar led 21 of her Senate colleagues in a letter urging the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to reconsider proposed changes to the 2010 classifications of metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas. These classifications are tied to several housing and transportation programs and have important impacts on their respective cities and towns.
