WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration with oversight of federal elections, issued the statement below following the release of bipartisan draft legislation to update the Electoral Count Act.

“We must update the antiquated Electoral Count Act to ensure that electoral votes for president accurately reflect the election results in each state and to improve the process for counting electoral votes in Congress,” said Klobuchar. “In February, Senator Blunt and I met with the bipartisan working group and I shared with them draft legislation that I wrote with Senators King and Durbin. I appreciate the hard work of the working group to achieve bipartisan consensus on this draft legislation. I look forward to continuing to work with the group and Ranking Member Blunt to pass a bill that brings needed changes to our presidential elections.

“As part of this effort, the Rules Committee will hold a hearing in the coming weeks on Electoral Count Act reform. While updating this law will bring needed clarity to our presidential elections, as Chair of the Rules Committee, with oversight over federal elections, I will continue pushing to advance other critical protections for our democracy included in the Freedom to Vote Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.”
