U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar Monday announced she has nominated Alec Gritzmacher of Eveleth to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for the class entering in the fall of 2019.
Gritzmacher, a current senior at Eveleth-Gilbert High School, has demonstrated a commitment to his community and to a consistency to improving his academic outcomes, a news release from Klobuchar’s office stated.
Gritzmacher is a distinguished member of the Eveleth community, dedicating his time to coaching little league baseball teams, tutoring elementary school children, and assuming numerous positions—backstage and in a featured role—with his local community theater, Mesabi Musical Theatre. Gritzmacher has demonstrated qualities that make him an outstanding candidate for admission into the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
“I want to congratulate Alec on his nomination to the Merchant Marine Academy,” said Klobuchar. “My office received a considerable number of applications from qualified Minnesotans across the state, and Alec demonstrates a commitment to excellence. I am confident he has the skills to serve our nation with honor.”
Last fall, Klobuchar accepted applications for military academy nominations, which include the United States Air Force Academy, Merchant Marine Academy, West Point, and the Naval Academy. After interviewing applicants, Klobuchar nominated select students to their chosen service academies. Academies are currently reviewing applications and will notify accepted applicants directly of their admission to attend this fall.
