Minnesota researchers will receive $1.6 million from the National Institutes of Health "BRAIN Initiative," an effort to map the human brain.

The Minnesota congressional delegation, includingU.S. Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken, and U.S. Reps. Keith Ellison and Tim Walz, announced the funding, which will go to researchers at Mayo Clinic in Rochester and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

The goal, once the human brain is mapped, is "finding new ways to prevent and cure brain disorders."

"The 'BRAIN' Initiative is a game-changing medical research program that will unlock new treatments for autism, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and other brain conditions," Klobuchar said. "With this new support, Minnesota can continue to be a national leader in medical research and innovation while helping to achieve a new generation of lifesaving medical breakthroughs."
