Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar said Thursday that she’s impressed with Supreme Court nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor.
Klobuchar, who met with Sotomayor last week, said President Barack Obama’s choice to replace retiring Justice David Souter is engaging.
“We talked a lot about our time as prosecutors,” the Democrat said. “She really greatly respected her fellow prosecutors and the victims that she worked with. It really gave a sense to me of her as a person.”
Klobuchar, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said she hopes Sotomayor’s confirmation hearing will be held by mid-July and that the process will be dignified.
“I’m very positive about her nomination and her qualifications and her experience,” Klobuchar said of the federal appeals court judge. However, she said she’ll examine Sotomayor’s case record before making a final decision on the nomination.
“When she’s been on three-judge panels and there’s been a Republican-appointed judge, 95 percent of the time they’ve agreed on the result. To me, she seemed moderate in her views,” Klobuchar said.
