Memorial Day is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served.

Fort Snelling National Cemetery held a ceremony to honor service members across Minnesota on Monday, with both Governor Tim Walz and Senator Amy Klobuchar in attendance.

Hundreds attended Monday’s ceremony to honor the bravery and selflessness of those who served. They also paid tribute to the families whose loved ones never came home.

Klobuchar called on everyone to keep the legacy of fallen soldiers alive and ensure they’re never forgotten.

“My dad used to always say that those who served are the heroes among us, and now he’s buried in this very cemetery,” she said. “A few yards away, among those heroes. I can’t think of a better tribute for all of our fallen heroes.”

Over the weekend, nearly 4,000 volunteers helped plant an American flag at each of the more than 190,000 headstones across the cemetery.

The non-profit “Flags for Fort Snelling” has been organizing the effort every year since 2018 in a salute to those who put their lives on the line for their country.
