Tuesday, members of all branches of military were recognized at the Minnesota State Fair.

Gov. Tim Walz and other elected leaders attended the opening ceremony for the fair's "Military Appreciation Day" at the Leinie Lodge Bandshell.

"I'm just so honored to be here for Military Appreciation Day," U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar said.

During her remarks, Klobuchar expressed gratitude that service members are returning home from Afghanistan. She went on to say, "My prayers right now are with the families and loved ones of our military who lost their lives in, or were wounded during, the terrorist bombing in Afghanistan. They were brave heroes, and we are indebted to them and their families. And as we mourn, we remain forever grateful for their service."

In his remarks, Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Larry Herke mentioned the upcoming 20th anniversary of Sept. 11 and asked ceremony attendees to join events, including the Day of Remembrance Official Ceremony at 9 a.m., at the Minnesota State Capitol.

"On the Capitol Mall, we'll be doing a remembrance and honoring ceremony. I'd like you to come and spend time with us, especially the veterans who served during that time, but I think it's important that all veterans and their families join with us."

Tuesday, veterans and active military members, as well as their spouses, were able to get fair tickets at a discounted rate of $11. Many merchandise and food vendors were also offering special discounts.
