AUSTIN, Minn.- According to Consumer Product Safety Commission data 184 children were strangled to death by a window cord in the last 16 years.
U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) are implementing the strongest possible child safety protections including making window cords safer.
Klobuchar says the current voluntary standard is in need of improvement. It has not been updated since 2012 and doesn’t reflect recent changes in technology and the window covering marketplace.
“In this modern time when we’ve learned so much about the dangers of window cords there should just be no reason that we can’t have standards that work and save lives,” said Klobuchar.
The senators are in contact with Window Covering Manufacturers Association and Klobuchar says they agree window cords need to be safer and are looking into ways to make improvements.
