WASHINGTON—Following efforts from U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, the Consumer Product Safety Commission is recalling more than 500,000 hoverboards that pose an injury risk due to fire hazards, a release from Klobuchar's office said Wednesday.
The commission announced hoverboards from eight manufacturers and importers are being recalled because of fire hazards related to their lithium-ion battery packs that pose the risk of injuries and property damage, the release said.
Earlier this year, Klobuchar urged the commission to share findings of its investigation into the safety of hoverboards with consumers as soon as possible. After Klobuchar's call to action, the commission named manufacturers linked to hoverboard-related fires, warned about safety markings and described its plan for addressing safety concerns.
"Today's announcement helps ensure that the safety and protection of American consumers remains a top priority. Removing these hoverboards from the market is a critical step in preventing future injuries," said Klobuchar in the release. "Consumers will now be equipped with the necessary safety information about these hazardous defects before purchasing and using hoverboards."
