During a speech on the Senate floor, Klobuchar underscored the need to pass legislation that will deliver vital economic assistance to Ukraine and authorize sanctions against those who have contributed to the crisis
WASHINGTON, D.C. – During a speech on the Senate floor, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar urged the Senate to take swift action to pass a critical aid package for Ukraine. Klobuchar underscored the need to pass legislation that will deliver vital economic assistance to Ukraine and authorize sanctions against those who have contributed to the crisis.
“As the past week has made clear, the crisis in Ukraine is not waiting for us. We’ve witnessed Russia’s blatantly illegal annexation of Crimea and its continued efforts to bully, intimidate, and weaken the new Ukrainian government,” Klobuchar said. “It is critical that we come together to pass this bipartisan legislation to demonstrate our support for Ukraine, our abhorrence of the Russian government’s actions that violate Ukraine’s sovereignty, and our commitment to continue leading the world through a tough and determined response to this crisis.”
The bipartisan Support for the Sovereignty, Integrity, Democracy, and Economic Stability of Ukraine Act would authorize assistance to Ukraine to help it recover from an economic downturn and withstand recent Russian aggression. The legislation would authorize loan guarantees and aid to Ukraine and approve sanctions on individuals in Ukraine and Russia who are responsible for violence and serious human rights abuses, as well as those who contributed to corruption in Ukraine.
