WASHINGTON - Following the release of a new intelligence report about the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) issued the following statement:

“This report serves as a reminder that across the world, powerful forces continue to suppress fundamental human rights and escape scrutiny – often with tragic results. That is why I introduced the Jamal Khashoggi Press Freedom Accountability Act – when leaders try to stifle dissent and target journalists for telling the truth, there must be consequences. America cannot stay silent in the face of gross violations of human rights and press freedoms.”

This month, Senators Klobuchar and Leahy (D-VT) reintroduced the Jamal Khashoggi Press Freedom Accountability Act to ensure governments that commit human rights abuses against journalists are held accountable. The legislation would place targeted sanctions on individuals and restrict foreign aid to foreign governments that commit human rights abuses against journalists. It would also increase reporting on these human rights violations.
