WASHINGTON- U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) released the below statement following reports that the Federal Trade Commission is investigating Facebook. It has been reported that Cambridge Analytica misused the data of 50 million Facebook users. On Monday, Klobuchar and Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) called on the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Charles Grassley (R-IA), to hold a hearing at which Senators can publicly question the CEOs of technology companies. Last week—before the breach—Klobuchar began calls for the technology companies to come before the Judiciary Committee.

“Reports that the Federal Trade Commission is investigating Facebook for the breach involving the personal data of 50 million Americans is a positive step toward determining whether the media company violated a 2011 consent decree. I urge the Federal Trade Commission to conduct a thorough investigation to assess whether Facebook violated the decree or any other applicable laws. Facebook has a legal responsibility to ensure user data is secure and that its policies are transparent. Facebook must uphold the privacy rights of its users and keep its promises when it comes to notifying them if there has been a violation.”
