WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar released the following statement today on the U.S. intelligence report concluding an unprecedented Russian interference in the U.S. election:

“The report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence leaves no doubt that Russia used covert cyberattacks, espionage, and harmful propaganda to try and undermine our democracy. This unprecedented interference in our election was specifically designed by the Kremlin with the goal of making Americans lose faith in our election system. We are not alone. Russia has a pattern of waging cyberattacks against democracies across the world. On my recent trip to the Baltics, Ukraine, and Georgia with Senators McCain and Graham, it became clear that this is not about one party, one election, or even one country. It's about defending democracies, and we must be a united front in fighting Russian aggression."

Klobuchar has joined with other senators to introduce legislation to create an independent, nonpartisan commission to comprehensively investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election. Klobuchar was recently in Ukraine, the Baltic states, and Georgia to reinforce support for our Eastern European allies and to focus on mounting international cybersecurity threats. The bipartisan congressional delegation was led by Republican Senator John McCain from Arizona, the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and also included Klobuchar and Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. Klobuchar has also urged the Administration to include U.S. election systems as part of our critical infrastructure. She was one of 27 Democratic and Republican Senators who sent a letter to President-Elect Trump calling for him to stand with the people of Ukraine against Russian aggression.
