WASHINGTON - U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Tina Smith (D-MN) announced that the House of Representatives passed legislation that included $1,000,000 in funding for a project to upgrade water infrastructure in Kanabec County. This project, which Klobuchar and Smith worked to include, will help enable key infrastructure improvements to the Braham Water and Wastewater Treatment Center. Klobuchar and Smith requested the funding along with U.S. Representative Pete Stauber (R-MN). The bill now goes to the Senate for final passage.
“Upgrading critical wastewater infrastructure will boost the health and safety of households in Kanabec County who rely on this system. With this federal funding, this project is one step closer to completion,” said Klobuchar.
“Minnesotans deserve to have safe, clean water,” said Smith. “The aging water and wastewater systems in Braham contain harmful pollutants like lead and are unable to provide reliable drinking water and wastewater service. This project would make upgrades to the decaying water systems and make sure that the city’s nearly 2,000 residents have access to safe drinking water and reliable wastewater treatment.”
Klobuchar and Smith have been actively involved in securing this federal funding for projects benefiting communities across the state through a process called “Congressionally Directed Spending” (CDS). During the CDS process, Klobuchar and Smith have considered project proposals and advocated for funding in close coordination with leaders from across the state.
