Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar issued the following statement for Veterans Day, 2013:
“Today we come together to honor our veterans. We salute the brave men and women who have stood up for this country, and we say a prayer for those who have fallen in its name. We pledge to protect those who have protected us, and we give thanks for their families, whose struggle lies not on the battlefield but right here at home.
"We pay special thanks to the more than 370,000 veterans who call Minnesota home, and as we reflect on their incredible sacrifice, we rededicate ourselves to their cause. Our commitment, like their courage, must never waver. Because while we can never truly repay the debt we owe them, we can honor them with our actions.
"That’s why I have fought to make sure our men and women in uniform have the support they need overseas and the resources they deserve when they return--whether it’s a home, a job or healthcare. Our troops fight every day to keep this country safe, and they shouldn’t have to fight to get what they have earned. That’s why this year Congressman Walz and I introduced legislation to help correct errors on medical reports to ensure no veteran is denied their benefits.
"It gave me great pride to see our state’s name painted across the beautiful new USS Minnesota earlier this year. The ship, which joined the Navy’s fleet in September, is a powerful reminder of our state’s long tradition of service—a tradition spanning from the Battle of Gettysburg to today.
"I join all Minnesotans to honor this tradition and to say thank you to our veterans, our troops and their families. May we never forget their courage and dedication, and may their spirit of selflessness live on in our steadfast commitment to them."
