WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) released the following statement on the five-year anniversary of the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol:

“Americans will never forget what happened on January 6, 2021: Violent insurrectionists attacked our democracy and stormed the Capitol with the goal of overturning a free and fair election. Thanks to the heroism of our Capitol Police officers, democracy prevailed. Five years later, it remains incumbent on all of us to ensure what happened that day never happens again.

“While we came together on a bipartisan basis after the insurrection to improve security at the Capitol and to strengthen our electoral process, the President’s pardons, his blatant disregard for the law, and his attempts to rewrite history are an insult to law enforcement and undermine our democracy. We will keep fighting to protect and strengthen our democracy — as we have for nearly 250 years.”
