Klobuchar: We should not play politics when it comes to ensuring our national security

WASHINGTON, DC – In the wake of Al-Shabaab’s threats against the Mall of America, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) today called for immediate action to prevent a shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Without congressional action, funding for DHS will expire on Friday at midnight, which would mean over 1,700 DHS employees in Minnesota would be forced to work without pay or be furloughed. In a speech on the Senate floor, Klobuchar urged her colleagues to immediately pass legislation to ensure the Department stays open and has the resources it needs to keep our country safe.

“At a time when terrorist groups like al-Shabaab are calling for attacks on the Mall of America, it’s unfathomable that we’re now just four days away from a shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security,” Klobuchar said. “With the clock ticking, we cannot afford to play politics with our national security and withhold vital funding that helps keep our country safe. We need to act immediately and pass a straightforward bill that will ensure DHS has the resources it needs to protect communities in Minnesota and across the country.”
