WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar met with new Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald to discuss strengthening care for America’s veterans. Klobuchar spoke with the Secretary about the investigations into the Minnesota VA facilities, including recent allegations of misconduct at the Hibbing VA clinic, and reforms to ensure veterans are getting the timely, high-quality care and benefits they deserve. Yesterday, Klobuchar sent a letter with Senator Al Franken and Representatives Tim Walz and Rick Nolan to the VA Inspector General calling for a thorough investigation of recent allegations made by former Hibbing VA employees that they were ordered to falsify records to hide appointment delays.

“I have always believed that when we ask our service members to fight and sacrifice for us in defense of our nation, we make a promise that we're going to support them when they come home,” Klobuchar said. “From ensuring they have high-quality health care and education to investigating any allegations that they have been mistreated, we must always have their back. It was an honor to meet with Secretary McDonald to discuss how we can improve our system to ensure American’s veterans are receiving the support they earned and deserve.”

Other veterans’ issues Klobuchar and McDonald discussed included ensuring continued funding for the VA health care system in Minnesota, improving the electronic claims process, increasing opportunities for veterans to succeed in college, and combating veteran homelessness.
