MINNEAPOLIS — U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) released the following statement to mark Somalia Independence Day on July 1:
“I am honored to join the Somali community in celebrating the 60th anniversary of Somalia’s independence. Our state is proud to be home to the largest Somali population in the United States. The Somali community in Minnesota represents the very best of our state. They’re our teachers, our small business owners, the coaches of our kids’ teams, our neighbors, and our friends. Their economic and cultural contributions make our state stronger.
“I remain committed to working with the Somali community to ensure the United States helps to promote freedom and economic development while strengthening democratic institutions in Somalia.
“On this Independence Day, let us celebrate all the progress made for peace and development in Somalia, honor the history and tradition of the Somali community, and safeguard our tradition of ensuring Minnesota – and all of America – is a safe and welcoming place for so many Somalis to call home.”
