WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Chair of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Competition Policy, Antitrust, and Consumer Rights, released the statement below after the Department of Justice announced that it would take action to block the proposed merger between Spirit Airlines and JetBlue.

"It is critical that we have a competitive air travel market to keep airline fares low and service quality high. With today’s announcement, the Department is taking an important step to ensure that the carriers continue to compete for customers, particularly those who are cost conscious, an issue I urged the Department to consider when evaluating any merger involving Spirit Airlines."
