WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar highlighted how more must be done to ensure that all Americans can cast their ballot on election day. At a Senate Rules and Administration Committee hearing with Bob Bauer and Ben Ginsberg, the respective counsels for the Obama and Romney campaigns and the chairs of the bipartisan Presidential Commission on Election Administration, Klobuchar discussed the Commission’s recommendations to reduce long lines at the polls and she also highlighted the need to boost same day registration. Last year, Klobuchar introduced the Same Day Registration Act with Senator Jon Tester (D-MT), which would require states to allow people to register to vote for a federal election on the same day that they cast their ballots.

“Voting is a fundamental right in this country, and the long lines and delays many voters experienced last election are simply unacceptable,” Klobuchar said. “Reforms to reduce wait times and promote same day registration are vital to ensuring that everyone can exercise their right to vote and have their voices heard.”

Minnesota has same-day voter registration and consistently has one of the highest voter turnouts in the country. Seventeen percent of all Minnesota voters registered on election day in 2012.
