The Senate Commerce Committee has passed the bipartisan ‘AM For Every Vehicle Act,’ meaning legislation will direct federal regulators to require automakers to maintain AM broadcast radio in their new vehicles at no additional charge.

U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, a member of the committee and backer of the act, said, “it would be a huge mistake to have people driving around when they’ve seen fires, tornados, and flooding and not have AM radio.”

The ‘AM For Every Vehicle Act’ will also require automakers to sell vehicles without access to AM radio before the Act’s effective date.

The bill now goes onto the full Senate for consideration, something that will not happen until lawmakers return from August recess.
