WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar today released the following statement on the mass shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada:

“Today we are stunned by what happened in Las Vegas. It was the largest mass shooting in U.S. history with at last count fifty-eight dead and more than five-hundred injured. We mourn for the victims and their families. Today that is and should be our focus as well as making sure that those who were hurt get the best medical care this country can give. But as the days and weeks go on we are right to ask questions: Who is this man who senselessly killed so many and what was his background? How did he get the guns? How did this happen again and what can be done to stop it in the future?

“I have long supported sensible gun legislation and funding for mental illness. We must open our hearts and minds to new approaches. We must do more than express sympathy, no matter how heartfelt it is.

“Yet today our hearts truly break for those killed and wounded. As we learn the personal stories of those who perished it will become even more tragic. Every one of them will have a story. Every one of them had a life worth living.

“These kinds of tragedies should not happen in America.”
