The resolution encourages each eligible citizen to register to vote; verify personal information; and to cast a ballot on or before election day

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Roy Blunt (R-MO), Ranking Member and Chairman of the Senate Rules Committee with oversight jurisdiction over federal elections, introduced a resolution in the Senate recognizing September 22, 2020, as National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) with over 20 cosponsors.

“Our country is stronger when everyone participates in our democracy. Voting is the best way for the American people to ensure their voice is heard and their elected leaders are held accountable. Amid the unprecedented disruptions to daily life during this pandemic, we should be doing everything we can to strengthen the ability to vote,” Klobuchar said. “National Voter Registration Day is an important reminder for all Americans to register to vote and to make a plan to cast a ballot.”

“Elections give Americans the opportunity to make sure their voices are heard on the important issues impacting their community, state, and our nation,” said Blunt. “It is critical that all eligible voters take time to ensure they will be able to take part in a tradition that has made our nation’s democracy one of the most admired in the world.”

Klobuchar and Blunt introduced the National Voter Registration Day resolution to encourage each eligible citizen to register to vote, verify with the appropriate state or local election official that the name, address, and other personal information on record is current, and cast a ballot in the election. Text of the resolution can be found HERE.

In addition to Klobuchar and Blunt, the resolution is cosponsored by Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Michael Bennet (D-CO), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Ben Cardin (D-MD), Chris Coons (D-CT), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), Mazie K. Hirono (D-HI), Doug Jones (D-AL), Angus King (I-ME), Ed Markey (D-MA), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), Tina Smith (D-MN), Tom Udall (D-NM), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), and Ron Wyden (D-OR).

National Voter Registration Day was created in 2012 as a way to raise awareness about the need for Americans to register to vote and keep their registration current. It is celebrated on the 4th Tuesday in September in order to raise awareness prior to the 30-day registration deadline that some states observe.

Earlier this month, Klobuchar and Blunt introduced a resolution recognizing September 1 as “National Poll Worker Recruitment Day.” The resolution has passed the Senate.
