As co-chair of the Canada-U.S. Inter-Parliamentary Group, Klobuchar has long led efforts to ease border restrictions between the two countries

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), co-chair of the Canada-U.S. Inter-Parliamentary Group, released the statement below following the official resumption of the Remote Area Border Crossing Program, which allows U.S. travelers to enter Canada via water or ice, rather than land or air ports of entry.

“As chair of the Canada-U.S. Inter-Parliamentary Group, I have long advocated for eliminating barriers to travel between the United States and Canada because cross-border travel is crucial to businesses and families across Minnesota. I pushed for the resumption of the Remote Area Border Crossing Program in numerous conversations with senior Canadian officials, and I am glad it is now back up and running. This is a game changer for Minnesotans and Canadians alike that will help boost tourism and facilitate access to homes and businesses on both sides of the border.”

As co-chair of the Canada-U.S. Inter-Parliamentary Group, Klobuchar has long led efforts to safely reopen the U.S.-Canadian border. In March, she urged the Biden administration to work with the Canadian government to explore options to ease border restrictions between the two countries.

Last November, Klobuchar met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and called on the Canadian government to ensure parity in border entry requirements. She also successfully led efforts to ease border restrictions over land and ferry ports of entry.
