Congress Passed Funding Bills with Resources for Minnesota Projects Secured by Klobuchar, Smith

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Tina Smith (D-MN) announced that they secured $300,000 in funding in the Fiscal Year 2024 federal budget for United Way of Steele County to purchase ten lots for affordable housing construction in Owatonna.

“Affordable housing is key to supporting our workforce and our economy. We worked with local leaders to secure resources for this project to expand access to affordable housing, and now it’s one key step closer to completion,” said Klobuchar.

“Without a safe, decent, affordable place to live, nothing else in your life works. Not your job, your education or your health. I always say that the best ideas come from those closest to the work, and this project is exactly that,” said Smith. “Expanding access to affordable housing will have a direct positive impact on families hoping to put down roots in Owatonna.”

Klobuchar and Smith have been actively involved in securing this federal funding for projects benefiting communities across the state through a process called “Congressionally Directed Spending” (CDS). During the CDS process, Klobuchar and Smith have considered project proposals and advocated for funding in close coordination with leaders from across the state.

Projects are expected to receive funding over the next several months.
